is going to be put down. My wonderful and dearly-loved Gandalf the Grey, a Peugeot 205 GTi, which I've had since it was just a baby in 1989, was tail-gated today by an even older (but much heavier) Land Rover. So it's been towed away for the Engineer to assess it. And the cost of repairing the damage to the boot and wheel arch is almost certainly going to be far higher than the book-value of the car.

It serves me right for thinking about replacing it last autumn, when its MoT was due. We even looked at some used cars, but none of them measured up to my Peugeot, for nippy-ness or just sheer joy of driving. It was the car of choice for holidays in France or the Lake District, and the fact that it was beginning to get a spot of rust here and there didn't matter to me.

I am going to have to come to terms with it.

On the other hand, you can get a good deal on a newish owned-only-by-the-dealer MG ZR: as soon as the Engineer pronounces the doom of Gandalf, I'll be off to look at them again!
